On a somewhat recent tour of his bookshelves, Hank Green mentioned the Unwritten series. Since I value Hank’s taste and nerdcred and am always on the lookout for new science fiction, fantasy, and graphic novels to read, I ordered the first volume in the series from my local library.
Going into it, I had no idea what the series would be about. And, since it starts off a little weirdly and slow, and didn’t really understand what was going on, I only got a page or two in and then got bored and ooh shiny.
But I came back to it the next day and stuck through and I am so glad I did!
The story is about Tom Taylor, son of the famous author of a Harry Potter-esque series in which the main character is named Tommy Taylor. There’s a connection between Tom and Tommy and, increasingly, Tom finds his life taken over by a universe that he thought was fiction.
That’s a pretty awful summary – there’s so much going on, and I really can’t do it justice without completely spoiling it.
I’m loving all the literary references in the story and I’ll definitely be getting the next volume!
